The Nightmare Of Credit Card Theft by Sue Writer on October 31, 2011 NEW YORK Blogger Amanda Grossman and her husband Paul recently had their credit card number stolen . The credit card itself was still in Paul’s wallet , so only the number had been taken . In early September , Amanda received an 800 call on her cell phone . While she doesn’t normally respond to such calls , she answered that one . It turned out to be the credit card company . Two 400 purchases had been made at a department store , which is not a normal pattern for them . She let them know that the purchases were not theirs , and the card had , clearly , been . compromised Unfortunately , Paul was on a business trip in Dallas at the time with the credit card as his only form of payment . They left the account open , but he

: Getting A Credit Card for Your College Student : Insanity or Good Parenting by Ben DeMeter on October 31, 2011 So your little angel is all grown up and about to leave home for college . Besides picking up few cases of toilet paper and sheets to fit those oddly shaped dorm beds , you’re thinking about opening up a new line of credit just so your child has a card to carry around in case of an emergency . While it’s good parenting to make sure your kid always has a piece of plastic in their purse or wallet to bail them out of a tough situation , is trusting your credit score to someone in their late teens in a town full of shopping outlets really a good idea It actually might be . While you shouldn’t go and sign your kids up for an American Express Platinum Card there are options on the

Even my toaster has to go. It's one of those fancy, stainless steel, four-slicer monstrosities. It won't fit on the limited counter space in my new kitchen. I'm in the midst of downsizing, and it isn't pretty. I woke up one morning a couple of weeks ago and decided it was time to take the plunge and sell my house. What I was not prepared for was not only would I have to sell my house, but almost everything else I had accumulated over the past 20 years. Plus, I would have to buy a new home, which while less expensive, isn't a cheap process.

A new paper by staffers from the New York Federal Reserve compares what people say they owe to hard numbers derived from lenders on what they actually owe, and finds we generally know what we owe, with one exception: Credit cards. Only on credit cards is their a difference, and it's a big one. We underreport what we owe on our cards by a third to one-half, the researchers say.The research sheds some new light on a topic that's at once a foundation of the card industry, and a mystery: the fog that comes over consumers when they pull credit cards out of their wallets.

Four years ago today, the Taking Charge blog posted its first entry. I blogged about my daughter, a middle-schooler at the time, who was discovering the convenience of plastic payment cards. She was a newbie at the school and had not yet gotten her school ID card, which also doubles as the lunch payment card. So, she pulled out cash at the lunch counter and slowed the whole line down. Lesson learned: Plastic is faster and doesn't anger the folks in line behind you. That was four years ago. The payment card world has changed dramatically since then.
